Hi Brian, 

The very same reason that it "...magically loses its length" when it's 
incorporated as part of a run of coaxial cable, I guess...!

Some parts of Ham radio are STILL black magic---aren't they...? Maybe THAT'S 
one of the many reasons that we love it so...
