Hi Bob,

I use that same wire mesh for my tomato baskets. They are in the ground about
8 months out of the year. I have had my current set for about ten years now
and many of the bottom "spikes" (just part of the mesh with the horizontal
members cut off) have rusted through. Our water is very good (Sierra snow
melt), low mineral content and our water heaters last 20+ years. Depending on
your soil and water, I would estimate the life span of your ground system using
steel mesh at between five and ten years. Could be even less if you have high
mineral content in either the soil or the water. Might be better to fork over
the bucks for a couple big spools of copper wire.
