Hi Tom(s) -- An interesting thread. Just a couple of questions for W8JITom:
Recently, there has been some empirical work done that suggests that
radials just laid on the ground couple very unpredictably to the soil, and
for current return purposes do a very lossy job. When you say
"ground-mounted radials" I assume you mean buried at least a few inches(?)
If the resistive loss between the base of the tower and the ground is an
issue in elevated radials, why couldn't that be largely resolved by a good
tower grounding scheme (which would also have lightning protection value)?
ON4UN says in his book that it's important to run a Beverage at least a
quarter wavelength from any vertical conductors (such as towers) because
Beverages largely respond to vertical polarization and therefore will
couple in a lot of noise from those conductors. That would seem to be at
odds with your concern about coupling between elevated radials and a
Beverage -- or am I missing something?
