A pier pin bottom for ham applications IMO is more hassle than it's
worth. You have to temporarily guy the first section so that you can stack the
other sections thus doing everything twice. What a waste of time.
A pier pin on a big tower with big loads is a good idea. It equalizes the
leg compression forces to one place. We're talking tall towers with big
headloads, microwave dishes, etc. (A 10 foot microwave dish has almost 50
sq.ft. of wind loading).
Typical ham towers and ham loads are subject to much smaller forces. I
much prefer a section set in concrete. Then it's strong enough to stack up to
the first set of guys. And no putzing around with temporaries.
