The use of a gin pole for the pull-up support
when raising a beam vertically away from the
tower can put an excessive side load on the
gin pole. At $500 replacement cost, this can
be an expensive mistake if the gin pole is
overstressed. It has happened before.
Gin poles are intended for VERTICAL lifts
only, up the side of the tower.
My preferred method is to tie the upper rope to
a tower leg or put a pulley off the tower.
