Comments regarding band openings from W1 to Eu represents the issue of, at
the beginning of the opening, in order to have the best signal level and
remembering the D-Layer is quite prevalent due to sun exposure (still
daylight) and this layer has a very high absorption quality, a low antenna
producing a high angle of takeoff is best. The good band opening quality
relates to producing a signal that goes straight up and down and does not
skim along this layer, therefore losing less signal strength. The higher
antennas at the beginning of the opening on 40 tend to lose more signal
level as it's energy stays longer in this D-Layer. After night comes, the
D-Layer goes away (or it significance is reduced) and thus the higher
antennas will be better. Bottom line, the best combination is two
antennas, one to cover the band openings and the other to work through the
night. Given the choice, I would take the one at 90 ft.
