TTers,

I recently acquired some Rohn 55G sections that need refurbishing.
The sections have some surface rust which will be removed with a
wire wheel and are painted red and white with a water-based
(environmentally friendly) paint.

For future rust prevention and aesthetic reasons (neighbors),
I plan to repaint with grey cold galvanize paint. However, I am
seeking advice on surface preparation and what to do with the
existing paint. The two options are

A) Remove all old paint and do the AGA recommended prep for
   painting galvanized steel
(if so, what is the best method to remove the paint?)

-or-

B) Remove only loose paint and apply the cold galvanize paint over
the remaining red/white paint after a suitable prep?
(if so, what is the best method to prep the old paint and
   exposed portions of the tower?)

It seems that A) would be the preferred method but B) would
require significantly less effort to prep than A) so I am
wondering if good results can be achieved via option B).

Suggestions & comments are encouraged.

BTW, I priced hot dip galvanizing and was quoted ~$50/section
(100 lbs.) plus a paint removal charge. I also received a quote
for sandblast, primer and paint at $80/section plus paint cost.
A sandblast with a single coat of cold galvanize would cost a b
it less, but still more than I am willing to pay at this point.

Awaiting enlightenment,

Steve
