What a coincidence. Yesterday I had assembled a D40 and was trying to decide
whether to put it on 40 or 30 meters. Then I see this discussion on the
reflector. I have decided to put it up for 30 meters and was wondering which
would be the preferred method of shortening the antenna. From my rough
calculations, going from 40 to 30 meters and using the loading coils in the
system, it would need to be about 32 feet long. The question is where should
the 6 feet on both sides be taken from? If I removed the end pieces which
attach to the loading coil it would get me there. But is this the best or
worst place to do it? It would be the easiest. Should the end pieces be
shortened halfway and the rest taken in the middle? I would think it would be
best to keep as much as the antenna before the coils as possible but what
effect would having the coils at the end do?

Any suggestions?
