Yes, a prostate biopsy can be a good thing, if
warranted. In my case, it detected early stage
prostate cancer. I went thru external beam radiation
treatments for a little over a year ago. As of my
last checkup 6 weeks ago, the PSA is still too low to
read & it looks like maybe they got it all.
*** BUT TAKE NOTE *** !!! --- Be sure you choose the
urologist who does your biopsy VERY CAREFULLY !!! The
one who did mine did it via an ultrasound probe with
the needle in the center of the probe. He stuck it up
the backside & used NO local anesthetic or generalized
pain reliever. He did 7 sticks * the biopsy was
positive for PCa. *** BUT *** --- he was sloppy &
botched it and managed to hit the pudendal nerve.
Ever since the biopsy, I have been in constant pelvic
pain in that area. The pain is aggravated by sitting
-- guess I'll never be able to sit all the way thru a
48-hour DX contest - HI!! And nerve damage is VERY
hard to prove, so I have been unable to take legal
action against that doc with any valid hope of winning
the case.
So, a word to wise ... choose carefully who does your
biopsy unless you don't care if he maims you
permanently. My second opinion said it never should
have happened in the first place. There are risks to
everything, but in my case it was just plain slipshod
work. This is just my $0.02 worth, but I believe it's
good advice. Wish I didn't have to say ... "been
there, done that" ... in this regard.
