Interesting.  I did a similar test a few years ago
with a station about 20 miles away.  My 40-2CD is at
72 ft and showed fairly deep front-to-side but also
had about 6 db front-to-back on 18 Mhz in favor of the
"normal" 40 M forward direction.  Go figure!  FYI...
