I have one of the Preform Line Products splices.
Basically, it looks like a regular Dead End grip
that has been straightened out.  Bottom Line:
you only have HALF the number of strands
(well 4 vs 7) at the splice.  Best to use an
insulator and two grips.

Here is my "3 Bolt" Utility type termination Horror Story:

I was on top of a friend's 130 ft R25 tower when I heard
a LOUD  BANG, like a big gun going off, and felt the
tower shake.  Fortunately, nothing more happened.
When I got down, one of the ground crew guys noticed
that there was a visible ring 1/4 inch out of the 3 Bolt
termination that held the SINGLE heavy guy wire that
connected a torque equilizer plate with 5 guys to the
anchor rod.  We concluded that the heavy wire had
SLIPPED in the 3 Bolt terminator and thank God had
held after relieving the excess tension.  No bolted 
plates for me!  (That was 30 years ago)
