I used a modest (5/8wl 40M) balloon-held vertical around 25 years ago.

One trick I used was to tether the balloon from upwind such that with
the wind direction those nights the wire was (generally) more or less
vertical.

A kid came along while I was putting it up and asked what I was
doing.  I explained that I was fishing for flying fish.  He said
"Oh." and walked off.
