Hello Kris
I agree not all hams can put up a tower and a HF beam, but there are
alternatives. If there are tall trees in the back yard then stealth wire
antennas can be strung or a simple multiband vertical in the back yard will
get you on the air even attic dipoles are used by some.
I bought used a HF6V from a ham in Ft Worth several years ago. He had ladder
line dipoles running though the tops of the trees in his back yard and in a
few trees in his neighbors yard. They were so well hidden that I had to
follow the feed line running up a limb near the house to see the wires in
the trees. He said they had been up there for years and no one had any idea
that they were there
I used the HF6V for several years ground mounted in back of the house I have
worked almost every state and some nice DX with 100 watts. All the contacts
were on 10 meter while I was a Tech+ and I have 2 certificates on the wall
for 1st place low power phone for NTX in the Tech/novice class for the 10
meter contest.
Even Hams who don't have restrictions or CC&R's are unable to erect a tower
for financial reasons or lack of room. Towers and beams are expensive and
take a lot of room to put up at least the guyed towers do. I don't trust
crankups
