I believe the OLD (1960's) HyGain linearly loaded shorty forties
used a DIRECTOR which would act as a reflector when operated
in the phone band if the antenna was tuned for CW.

This problem does NOT happen with REFLECTOR type shorty forties
such as the Cushcraft.
