N4KG: It is a popular MYTH that a LOW Horizontal LOOP
produces low angle radiation. A 1 WL Loop close
to the ground produces HIGH angle radiation. The
free space pattern for a 1WL loop has nulls in the
plane of the loop so there is virtually NO radiation
off the sides which means no low angle radiation
when mounted horizontally.
On harmonic frequencies, each side is 1 or more
WL long and act as a complex configuration of
long wires above ground. The resulting patterns
are the product of the free space patterns of the
wires and the Ground Reflection Coefficients which
DO depend on Height above ground and LOW
horizontal antennas have very little ground reflection
