Ken,
Yes ,  I agree with Jack, I have been using quality PVC tape for 30 years on
PL259s on Antennas etc and I've never had a problem with it.  I always use
many layers and stretch it , and I've never had a leak etc.....and its very
inexpensive......I was given a home made antenna recently and on the end of
the coax was a clear plastic box with one end missing with the PL259
inside....
You had to slide the plastic box up & down the coax to attach  it.....it had
a tight fitting rubber grommet where the coax went thru.  I don't know if
this would do it.......for You....It still had an open end which isn't good.
