Mac has everyone on the right track but not quite there. You really want
www.samsonrope.com for the site. I have always used somewhat smaller
ropes such as the Samson Stable Braid series. 3/8 in is a good combination
of strength and weight and functionality. It works quite well for things up
to Rohn 55 and beyond and the typical Yagis up to 60ft booms
on 15/20 meters.

I was using some 3/8 in. this last week on a tower and realized that
the ropes are probably 15 years old and still look very good. I don't
use them every day but I have used them quite a bit and have loaned
then out some as well. They are braided ropes so they have no
tendency to "unwind". Good rope is a worthwhile investment.
I also have some 5/8 inch that I occasionally use--but it is too heavy
for most jobs. 3/8 or 7/16 is probably the right answer if you are
doing amateur radio type jobs.
Never liked Nylon ropes--too stretchy and they always want to get
tangled. The Stable-Braid ropes don't have any tendency to
tangle.
