If the (conducting) elements are retracted completely in to the boom, 
then the pulse delivered to the linear amp, RX, etc., through the 
feedline from a _nearby_ strike will be much smaller.

I agree that lightning can still strike the antenna itself, in which 
case retracting the elements won't matter much.
