Thickness doesn't have anything to do with the specified yield strength
of the material. The thickness has more to do with resisting the bending
moment of the mast.
(I'm not an engineer so excuse me if I haven't gotten into the technical
aspects and reasons.)
I haven't seen any real published specs on either Schedule 40 or 80 but
understand that the yield that Schedule 80 is around 35 kpsi.
