Gordon,

One of the "rules-of-thumb" used with tubing is to overlap 2-3 times the diameter of the element. Therefore, 5" is great on 1.625" tubing while only about 2-1/2" is needed on the .875" diameter tubing. Of course, more is OK but from an economy and weight perspective, less is better!
