OK -- got it now. Fortunately, the case in point is 2 K9AY loops spaced 135 feet apart and fed 180 degrees out of phase for an endfire pattern. F/B ratio and gain aren't so important as the overall shape of the pattern, which seems to be best/narrowest with the 180-degree phasing.
