Here's one input:

At K2OWR's 11 acre hilltop property where we do some HF-DX contesting (five
towers, miscellaneous other antennas), there is virtually no "open space,"
everything is very treed. Bill's done a great job clearing maybe 1/2 acre
or 1 acre of most trees, to make room for some yard and stuff around the
house, but most of the land is heavily treed.

We've used verticals there (most notably, to my recollection, the GAP
Voyager for 80m, it's about 50' tall or so) and they seem to tune and work
about the same as they do any other place. Of course, they all get used in
wintertime for the DX contest season, and not in summertime when the trees
are fully foliated. That may well make a difference.
