Don't need to retract it all the way, just make it sufficiently different
(longer or shorter) that it doesn' t interact.

I would think that the SteppIR folks have dealt with the reliability and
life issue.  They're pretty confident of their mechanisms.

As far as speed goes, you've got a point.  One of the beauties of a phased
array is the ability to rotate almost instantaneously.
