Actually you want to go to sqrt(2)/4 spacing. The gain and front to back
improve slightly.

Improved in what way? Did a quick check in NEC.
When going to about 1.5 wl spaceing, that will
give about 2 wl on the diagonal, two strong
aditional back loobes comes up in low elevation.
Hardly does anything to the strong high angle
rear loob which is very narrow and generaly isn´t
a big problem. Gain comes up with about .5 dB.
Do I miss something? I can´t see the improvement.
