And then, there are two discone configurations:
 
    One with the radial screen below a skirt of  flaring wires forming the 
cone,
 
and
 
    One with the flaring wires spreading  downward from a counterpoise-
    looking flat top above the spreading  wires.
 
The first configuration is used for HF air-to-ground  communications.
 
The latter can be seen at navy bases.  One might infer  that they might offer 
lower angles of radiation?
