Pete,

It sounds as if you have accomplished alot from your present location.
Congratulations! Those hard-earned experiences will be leveraged when you
get your new qth, and you'll do even better.

I recommend that the very first thing you do is purchase Fred K1VR's book
"Antenna Zoning" from ARRL. The bottom line is that you don't want to buy
any land that will be challenging to build your antenna support structure
on. The book is exceptional!

Also, get the ARRL Antenna Book and the upcoming 4th edition of ON4UN's
Lowband Dxing. The antenna book comes with two computer programs (HFTA and
MicroDEM) that allow you to study and compare the Dx Prowess of proposed
station locations based upon their topography. Lowband Dxing is packed with
practical info. The 3rd edition had a nice chapter on Dxing from a city
lot, amongst other things

I would find a neighborhood that is XYL approved and live there (makes her
happy), but also find a nice rural location with _no zoning_ to buy for my
station (makes you happy). Put up a cheap little building. Yes, it would
be a site accessed via remote control. It would be an electrically quiet
site, too. No TVI. So you could live in the 'burbs and dx from the sticks,
all over a phone line. Land with no zoning is often in the middle of
nowhere, and is typically very cheap.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

73, Scott W3TX
