Congrats on working the 3B8 on 40! You sure were at the right place at the
right time since he was calling cq and not already buried under dozens of QRO
stations. But covering that distance on 40 with a couple hundred watts and an
inverted vee up 45 ft is not unusual. You're certainly not going to be as
strong as guys running higher antennas or directional/gain antennas, but 200W
and an inverted vee at 45 ft will easily and regularly work the world on 40.

Last night, 3-16-04, I was dinking around with the new
beta release of Ham Radio Deluxe. I was on 40 meters
with my 756PROII and a 40 meter inverted-V with the
apex at 45 feet. The antenna is in the middle of
Kansas...in the middle of Newton...and in the middle
of my yard...broadside to east and west. Enuf. :>)
Well, getting to know the software I was looking at
the Telnet sessions to a DX cluster. I and saw quite
a few DX spots on 40 meters. I learned when I clicked
on the spot the radio would change to that frequency.
Hey, this is neat and I know this has been around for
awhile but I am just getting around to finding this
stuff.
Well, to make a long story even longer, I saw a spot
for 3B8 on CW and hit it to see if I could hear the
guy. I did!!!!! This guy is a heck of a long way
from Newton, KS. This was around 0245. He was
449...real weak...but I could copy him calling CQ.
So, I answered him. He came back and gave me a 559.
Now either this guy was a slim (which I doubt) or I
have one of the best homebrew 40 meter inverted-Vs
ever made...or the propagation is just right. To me,
this seems like an unlikely or unusual event for such
a long haul on 40 meters. Now, I have worked DX on 40
but that was when sunspots were a little better and
the antenna was a delta loop. I did hear some closer
in DX as well last night.
I would like to read some learned words on the
reflector as to propagation on 40 in relationship to
really crappy antennas.
To say the least, I am rather amazed, but I am curious
about all this from the middle of Kansas.
