Thanks to all for the feedback.  Won't acknowledge
the many individual suggestions.

conclusion:  

1) a pry-bar against the clamp, using brick or block as
fulcrum.  If it comes up easily, great.  if not,

2)  cut 'em off below grade.

Probably not worth screwing with a tripod/lift arrangement
or car jacks.  

It's the labor, not the material, that I need to save here.
