First, sorry for the length of the post. My digital camera died so I'm
giving the "thousand words".
Background: I was given this tower by our local historic/scenic railroad
after I rebuilt their antenna and radio system for them. They acquire a lot
of stuff through military and other surplus venues, so I suspect this tower
may have been military.
The Tower: Basically it is a fold over, crank up in 4 ten foot long
sections. I believe it is made from hard drawn aluminium, welded cross
braces of 1/4" or so rod, and has at least two layers of paint, OD green and
under that a medium blue. It is triangular and the bottom section measures
18" across the face with 1 1/4" o.d. tubular legs. The other 3 sections have
1" o.d. legs and are 14", 12", and 10" across their faces. The bottom
section has a heavy duty pivot/hinge at 32" up from the base to which is
attached a mount with a cut out to receive the antenna when it is upright.
The mount has 4 bolts about 7/16" diameter. When swiveled to the upright
position the face of the mount is 20" from the base. The base section also
has an anti climb guard of expanded mesh welded to all 3 sides extending up
48". The top section has two plates for mounting a 2" o.d. mast that are 3
1/2" apart, and 2 T-handle set screws to hold the mast. The top of each
section has a rotating sheave (pulley) for about 1/4" cable, while the
bottoms of the sections have a welded half-sheave. I suspect this was a
trailer or truck mounted tower at one time.
Questions: A.) What tower is this? B.) I plan to mount the pivot base on a
couple of 4x4 I beams sunk vertically into the usual type of concrete tower
base. Do I stand a chance of blowing the concrete apart over time? (I'm in
northern Utah.) C.) Should I guy the tower when it is at full extension? D.)
Any suggestions for routing the hoisting cable? and E.) Any estimates as to
what antenna size this thing will handle? Wasatch county wind speed is 70
mph.
