For JIT to work well, someone at the beginning of the food chain can't
believe in JIT and must stock parts so everyone else down the chain can
benefit from JIT. If not, then you have the headaches described below. So,
is there such a thing as true JIT for everyone?

Subject: [TowerTalk] Just in Time

Greetings,

The manufacturing philosophy mentioned in previous messages is called
"Just in Time".

We converted to it in my large company. Inventory costs went way, way
down, BUT if suppliers did not get their stuff to us in time, our schedule
to the end customer would slip. That is when the VP's went nuts,
demanding that we restore schedule. The results were lots of overtime,
"sick days", and ulcers by many. Only a select few work in that
environment and come out un-afflicted.

Our customers (usually USAF) were told one delivery date, then another,
then another. I remember really getting in trouble for advising the USAF
rep a "real delivery date". Customer wanted to know why he was always
lied to.

I was glad to leave and pursue another endeavor after 32 years in various
aspects of the business.

Warren; W7WY
