As a lower cost (but quite effective) alternative to a Variac or big 
copper, consider a boost/buck transformer operating in boost mode. In 
essence, it's a low voltage transformer (or auto-transformer) whose 
secondary is rated for the current required by the load, wired so that 
the secondary is added in series with the load (and in polarity with the 
line). In "buck" mode, the polarity of the transformer would be reversed, 
so that it subtracts from the line voltage). 

For example, let's say you need 5A at 120 volts to run the rotor, and 
you're losing 12 volts in the line. A 120V/12V transformer with a 
secondary rated for 5A would do that job. Obviously, you need to consider 
duty cycle with respect to rated current.
