Did you also change the sheaves?  For wire rope, the sheave is sized to 
match the rope.. the groove in the sheave is just the right radius so 
that the cable is supported over its entire diameter. The diameter of 
the sheave is also usually tailored to the diameter of the cable so that 
minimum bending radius requirements are met
