We seem to have an amazing capacity for drifting off topic.

The initial question was..." should I use springs in my guy system,
to prevent backlash?"

The answer, for the most part was, 'NO'. Dumb idea. Unsafe.
Unnecessary.

The real question is... what in hell is backlash? Sounds like it
might be what you get when you
don't properly tension a tower, and you get to see the torque load
when you stop rotating a beam.

As Steve said... tension the guys to spec. Prime directive. and
fuggedaboudit.

On the separate issue... how do we damp out the braking moment in
rotating our beams?
That's more a question of the beam and rotor system than the tower.
Any system which drops a
pawl into a gear to force the stop... like a Ham4 or Tailtwister,
stops fairly abruptly. The answer is...
don't drop the brake until the beam has coasted to a stop. Some
controllers are smart enough to
manage that. Some hams are not. In the heat of battle, it's easy
to forget and drop the hammer on
things.

The auto driveshaft coupling is intended to allow for slight
misalignment between transmission and
rear differential. It is NOT designed to be a shock absorber.
While you can make the system work,
you probably won't do much to soften braking transients in the rotor
system.

Towers are strong enough that it doesn't matter. Rotor brakes are not.
