Probably creosote, also used to treat wood for docks and railroad  
ties.  The EPA Superfund folks have been cleaning up the site of a  
former creosote facility a mile or so from my QTH.  They have spent  
well upwards of $100 million over the past 20 years and are still not  
finished.  Nasty stuff!
