I'm aware that when the signal is at the noise floor, it's going to make a
difference. (Seems like a no-brainer.) But, to the average ham with small
antennas and small pockets, it just isn't going to matter. Am I the ONLY
'average' ham here among a bunch of big guns?

You bet it is...depending on whose S meter you're looking at it could be
close to an S unit. Out here when the hordes of EU stations call, many
times they are S-3/4. It doesn't take too many dB to rise above the
pack....like around 3 db. Kinda like a shorty 40 vs a dipole.
