Wood, or Auger bits are *EXPENSIVE*,  I paid nearly $40 USD for a 1" 
Auger wood bit.  They can be found for less, but you usually get what 
you pay for.  OTOH half way though the plate I stuck a spike with it.  
It's beyond repair.
