You must locally remove the galvanizing before welding. As already noted,
there will be fumes, and the galvanizing can "spit".
To protect the metal afterward, clean back to bare metal and apply coats of
a zinc based paint. Get one with a really high percentage of zinc.

Subject: [TowerTalk] Welding Galvanized Parts
I have a special project that requires something of a specialized bracket
be created. I will be welding a galvanized BOLT to a galvanized BRACKET. One
this is done, I would expect that something should be done to protect all
the parts from rust. As I am not in a position to have this galvanized
currently, I am wondering what the masses might suggest in the way of
protection from the elements? - Mike
