Simple - make your own vertical "standard" with a plumb bob suspended from
something (a step ladder perhaps) out maybe 50 or 100 feet away from the
base and that will tell you which is vertical....

That is how I did it as well..I set up two ladders with a wooden arm clamped to each. I hung a plumbob from the end of the arm.....the plumb bob was a wrench in a bucket of water to damp out any oscillations. Choose a still day. I lay on the ground and supported my head with my arm. By rolling my eyes from the bottom to the top of the tower, I was able to judge the plumb to within half the thickness of the tower vertical members.
