I would definitely use a choke.  The vertical will likely be less than 50 
ohms so you may want to consider matching it with a hairpin or possibly an 
impedance changing un-un.

Hey Gang,
I've decided to replace my existing 56 ft TV Evans 17/80 trapped dipole with
something a tad different.  As I have the mast, etc, I'm planning on an
inverted L for 80m (Hey, I have a beam for 17m)

The question is, I'm kinda unsure if I need a unun or balun etc.  Plan to 
feed
with coax...
