There are chemicals available expressly for use in softening potting epoxies. I gave them extensive use in un-potting electronic modules for reverse engineering. If you proceed slowly in their application you can soften and remove a portion of the potting without disturbing circuitry farther from the zone of interest. Easy to use and not particularly messy if you exercise a modicum of care.
