Not to offend anyone but I consider a CB radio and a scanner to be similar when
it comes to the from end protection. Inadequate front end protection is not
limited to low price receivers but can also, unfortunately, in higher priced
receiver and transceivers as well.

Not exactly a watch but I had both a scanner and 2m portable lose their RX
front ends (neither connected to an external antenna or power) due to a
lighting strike on a power line 100 feet from a rental car during an untended
storm chase.

This sounds very anecdotal. Yes, a near strike lightning may take out CB radios
etc but that it took out digital watches make me suspicious. The are usually
metal encapsulated and very immune to external field. I believe a EMP strong
enough to take out a watch also will take out the person carrying that watch.
