I use the Weller 260w gun with the braid pretinned and then cut the braid square with a small tubing cutter, sharp box cutter and trim with small flush diagonals. It takes some time to get the barrel hot enough, but once it is all holes can be filled. I get the corner of the tip into the hole to kinda heat the braid directly. This also works for braid over foil coax 9913F7, Buryflex, LMR400 but even the slightest breeze can make it more difficult. IMO the 140w gun can't handle braid over foil coax.

The 260w Weller is about $46 from amazon and a 250w classic American Beauty is more than $210! ouch!

btw, the first click on the Weller switch is high, two clicks is low. Counterintuitive.

My almost 60 year old trusty soldering iron which I used to solder the hole and

I’m going to have to shop for a new one and that means buying on line since we
are a long ways from anyplace that carries electronic stuff.

Please, no ‘go to crimping’ suggestions. I agree it’s a great method but at my age
I’m not probably going to be doing many more, and I know the process for soldered UHF connectors.

Would just like some recommendations on soldering irons currently being used by some
of you for UHF connector soldering that would be available on the market. I’ve
a couple of Weller guns and an old low wattage soldering station, but neither will
work well for doing the UHF barrels.

Suggestions welcome,
