A quick run through Wheeler's equation says that a 3" diameter coil 2" long with 18 turns (basically closewound) will be 21.8 uH [L (mh) = (R^2 x N^2) / 9R + 10B]

Thanks, Jim. All comments appreciated. Do you know of any good calculators online that run through the equations for single layer coils like this? N6BV pointed me to http://www.zerobeat.net/G4FGQ/ which yielded a DOS program called SOLNOID3.EXE that computes things like self-resonance, dissipation, and so on. I had to resurrect an old computer to run it. Many years ago, I wrote a QPro calc for the classic equations in the Handbook, which I found to correlate nicely with what I built.
