FWIW, it's certainly new, but I just read that if you
pair two #18 gage wires,
you have #15 gage capacity, and if then pair the two #15's,
you have #12 gage capacity. 
Each paring reduces the gage by 3.

Did u check the wire gauges?
If your run is “long”, you need two motor power wires of larger gauge.
I don’t know what “long” is.
