Good questions. The elements failed when the tapes were retracted, so
it's the radomes (poles) themselves that failed somehow. It looks for
all the world like they simply fell out, but we won't know until the
antenna is down. We have lost one of the radomes -- it fell off of the
top of the building and could not be found. The radomes look like they
departed right at the housing that contains the tapes and motors.

The antenna is at the top of a spire on National Weather Center,
probably about 175' AGL. We already have a lead on a certified climber,
at an excellent rate, that knows their way around this installation.
Thus, getting the antenna down is a known cost.

I'll also contact SteppIR and find out what they think.

Not enough info to answer . . . What failed - Fiberglass poles and/or motors and copper tape elements? Whatever the answer, suggest call STEPPIR (Fluid Motion) and get a quote for parts, which will be the biggest cost. I have replaced a motor, which includes the copper tape element, and with the trade-in of the non-functional motor/element, the cost was (as I recall) under $300.

Now getting the antenna down to do the work (Not hard - good insts from Steppir), depends on the antenna location situation - need for a crane, Crank-up/Tilt-over towerm etc. If a crane is needed, my several experiences here in VA using both crane and bucket truck have cost about $140/hr. If you have your act together - everything ready for the "Lift" - an hour should e sufficient.

Good luck.

I'm the new trustee for the National Weather Center/OU Amateur Radio
Club. We have a 4 el SteppIR that has suffered the loss of half of two
elements. We need to get it down and work on it, but as I go hunting for
$ to do the work, I need an idea of roughly what I can expect it to
cost. I know some out there have done such overhauls. The antenna has
been up for about 10 years and the elements failed several moths ago.
How much work will this be and what do you thin it will cost?
