It was a 2000 dollar (or more) "hammer" and I put it in quotes, because I knew 
the guy who sold it to them. It was a impulse "hammer", which had a complete 
accelerometer kit with and had a specific stiffness. You mounted all sorts of 
accelerometers on the device under test (supplied separately) and then took 
your instrumented hammer and gave the DUT a rap with it, and you could measure 
the response to the now quantified shock

So yep, a hammer, but something special
