What about insulated stranded? You give up some of the ground to conductor
surface area but the wire compared to the rods is a pretty minimal part of
the network. Right?

Solid wire is clearly superior for corrosion resistance (hence longer
life in adverse environment) but is not best if it has to flex. Flexing
is where stranded is king.
