Hi Bud,

There is a fairly simple way to address and change the balance point of a large
antenna so that it is not an issue.

Here is the brief version – if you are interested we can talk further.

On my 15 and 20 meter yagis, I take the cap off the end of the boom then using
lead sheeting which can be purchased at Home Depot or similar store, I cut off
a piece and roll it like a sandwich wrap and place it at the end of the boom
that needs additional weight to balance. I put a small mast in the boom to
mast clamp and have it stick out of the bottom of the clamp by about 1’ – which
I balance on a flat tree stump (or table top) and go back to the boom to mast
clamp and make sure that it can balance, if not I repeat the process with
adding or subtracting more or less lead sheeting at the end of the boom. When
it balances just right at the clamp, I drill through the bottom and top of the
boom in the middle of the lead sheet and put a long eyebolt through all of it
and then bolt and seal it on both ends above and below the boom.

You now have a well balanced antenna that will remain so forever.

My 5L yagis are very easy to work on even in windy cndx because they are
balanced at the boom to mast clamp. This makes them easier to control, safer
to work on and reduces the stresses on the rotator and tower. It also prolongs
the life of the boom to mast clamps on the antenna since there is less “play”
in the ice and wind.

Subject: [TowerTalk] Skyhawks on TIC Rings?

I currently have a 3 stack of KT36XA's on a Rohn 55G tower. They are
mounted on TIC Rings - Model 1122E. I am considering replacing the KT36XA's
with Skyhawks.

Does anyone have experience mounting Skyhawks on my configuration - Rohn 55G
/ Model 1122E TIC rings? If so, was there anything tricky about the
installation? I am particularly worried about the potential need to mount
the antennas off of their balance point.

Any other thoughts or advice?

I know that K3WW is using a similar configuration and I have already gotten
an input from Chas.

Bud AA3B
