MANAGER COMMENTS:During the past year, there has been a lot of talk about
changing the CW/SSB contests to generate more activity. At Lake Texoma
(SC MINI) in March, I reported the CW contest was alive and well; and
should get better if we could sustain the interest as we have during the
past couple of years. I received about 60 logs (19 mobile, 4 DX, 40
Fixed) and three mobile and one fixed scores made it in the top ten
history records. Scores were converted to pre-1996 rules; see list at
bottom of this report. There have been some suggestions about the contest
and below is a list of some of the more popular items which have been
discussed. I would be interested in receiving your comments, and am open
to any suggestions with a view toward making the contest more enjoyable.
.	Contest hours: is 48 hours too long? .	Scoring for
mobile: credit for counties run? multipliers for new counties?
.	Scoring, general: mobile points too high compared to fixed, DX?
.	Accepting email Summary Sheets; paper contest logs for award
winners? .	QRP/Portable category: Is there enough
interest/activity to justify separate awards?Try to keep in mind this is,
first, a county hunting activity. I consider it more of a "party" than
contest, but without the awards and competitive spirit we can get
counties daily on the nets. This annual activity is also a good way to
introduce county hunting to contesters who aren't familiar with the nets
and MARAC.When I QSO someone in a contest (MARAC, CA, WA, PA, etc.) who
indicates they collect counties, I usually send them a one-page info
sheet on MARAC and county hunting (referring them to MARAC's info pack)
and the CW contest info. I've sent this info to about 50 new hams
(although I find out some have been members for years and are just trying
CW!) I also send the contest results to everyone who sends in a log, as
well as many of those I QSO for the first time.I appreciate the support
and participation of everyone who takes the time to join in the contest,
and I hope you continue to ejoy meeting new and old friends in this
annual activity.73, Norm, W3DYA - -
- - - - - - - - 997 MARAC (31ST) COUNTY HUNTERS CW CONTEST RESULTS -
SOAPBOXW6TMD(Darrel) - Contest conditions were great. It worked well
with the TQP also generating a lot of activity. I worked 101 new
counties on CW, so I was really pleased at the end!KC6CNV(Daniel) - Had a
lot of fun. Thanks to all the mobiles who kept the contest fun. I
worked 281 new counties in the contest.DL3DD(Leo) - It was participation
#16. Took part all CHC since I started in 1982. But results are not so
good; 59 counties and no new ones! Mostly conditions went down when the
mobvile approached the needed county. Hope to have more fortune in (CH)
NET.JA9CWJ(Yoshi) - I was able to participate in contest after a long
interval. However, was only able to hear one mobile station, N5QLZ/M,
Yazoo/MS at 22.35 May 4 - but no contact HI.DL4RX(Vena) - Conditions as
usual - no comment. I just enjoyed meeting friends. See you next
year.KN4Y(Ed) - Was sleepless in GA, WX channel had big storms for Sat.,
had 5 min. rain in Wilson Co., had to detour a 9-foot underpass in
meriwether Co, Spider 40M resonator disappeared with one hour to go in
contest. Will discuss contest in more detail with gator!W9MSE (Jeff) -
The contest went very well for me and sounded like a very active contest.
This is probably my favorite contest. I actually did quite a fit better
than last year even though I did not have a driver this year.... I didn't
hear KA3mmm very much, so don't know how he was doing and the same for
NF0X, W3XE, and W1TEE; but it was great to have them out there. (DC can
be used as Montgomery or Prince Georges counties MD)WT8P(Joe) - I enjoy
working the mobiles because I know that they are not working under ideal
conditions. I got you (W3DYA) Sunday morning and your signal into OH was
very good. At the age of 76 years and failing eyesight I operate a
"fixed" station. I still use my J45 knee key, though, and wait for the
next "straight key nite" HI! Best wishes to you and the gang!K5CWR(Fred)
- Nothing spectacular enclosed (log) but I had a lot of fun. I learned a
little and hope to do better next time.WD3P(Larry) - Once again a fun
contest, and this year most of them are new counties. AE3O(Packy) - Great
contest - lots of activities. I was really having a run on Texas
counties - all new ones! I think we recruited some new county hunters
after they year. I never did find WD3P mobile! Where were you
Larry?W2EZ(Tom) - I almost missed this one. Lost my R7 in a wind storm
in March... bent traps. I put up a 40-30-20 trap dipole and just got
through pruning it when the contest came on. The dipole got a good
workout.KR1B(Bob) - My son's wedding Sat and this contest made a great
weekend. How about a county hunters sprint CW contest for fixed
stations? Long line CW!K7DM(Don) - First time I've been in one of these.
While I didn't have much time for operating, I did manage a few. I'll
try to spend more time on this next year. For whatever it's worth,
contacts with me between now and the (Orlando) convention are worth 2,500
points for the Millionaire "thing". Probably not many CW folks into that
though. CU in Murfreesboro in Nov.N1IA(Barry) - My G5RV did better than
expected. Big boost from the Texans. Lot of new ones, 2nd
time.WZ3P(Bill) - Only 24 contacts; Honey-do's and other non-ham
activities limited by time in the contest. First time I worked counties
on CW; found it interesting. My FT-890 is not really the rig for CW
work. Expect to get Ten-Tec Omni VI Plus in July when XYL and I return
from vacation. Did get some new counties. Will be at it again
sometime.WC5D(Van) - 1997 was another super CW CH Contest! Several
mobiles put out county after county from morning 'til night; it was
GREAT!!! The WX and propagation were good, too. Worked KN4Y & W9MSE the
most. W9MSE ran my last 0-land co. 1997 marks my 30th entry out of 31
contests; and 21 in a row.K4UK(Stan) - Unfortunately our church in
Roanoke had their 40th Anniversary of the founding. All our "kids" and
three grandsons came for the whole weekend, so was only able to operate a
very short time. I did run a little mobile during run to the "garbage
dump". Worked a few in the TQP and with the exchange being the same, it
was easy to get the TX stations to confirm my co. Once again I heard
very little activity from the CT and MA QSO Parties. I did enjoy the
MARAC contest again this year; hopefully, next year I can put in more
time operating.W3EFY(Al) - Lots of fun. Wish I had more time to spend.
An antenna hung in the attic and lousy band conditions sure didn't help.
However, I did manage to nail my last county in MN. Next year hope to
have an outdoor antenna and hope the sunspots cooperate a little
better!VE2ABO(Adeoda) - First time for this contest and couldn't be on
very long. But had fun and will be back next year. (HW9, 4
watts)WB6IYS(Bill) - KN4Y/M should get a medal - he was cranking out GA
QSO's right down to the wire (I hope Ed doesn't read this....
Norm)W9MYY(Walt) - Condx here were very poor - 20 meter skip was too long
and 40 meters was so noisy I couldn't hear a thing!WA2BQI(Bud) - Great
contest this year and worked many new counties; plus had great fun riding
with all the mobile stations this year. Hope to see you all again next
year.AC4VR/SM6VR(Arne) - Operated from Indian Shores, Pinellas Cty, FL.
Just to waste some time on my holiday and giving out some QSO's to the
mobilers. "Stealth" antenna on the balcony.KB8KIK(Chuck) - This was the
first time I worked the MARAC CW contest. Wish I had put a little more
energy into it, but I had a ball and will be looking forward to next
year. I've been chasing counties off and on for about three years... I
think it's time to get serious about it. Thanks for the contest; I was
able to garner a few more new counties!W8PN(Hal) - Didn't have much time
for this year's contest but did get a couple of new counties for 2nd time
around. Just got a new Xceiver and not used to the "bells and whistles."
Antennas are in disarry, also. Hope to do better next year.W5NR(Art) -
Enjoyed party/contest, but too many state contests on same day! Is
"two-for-one" legal? Same QSO for CH and TX OK? (You bet, and CT and
MA, too!)K3WWP(John) - Sure was a lot of activity this year. I wasn't
able to take full advantage of it as condx wer not favorable for my QRP
signal. Jeff, W9MSE, usually copies me all the time, also, but not this
year. Could work W1NN regularly, and did pretty well with AA9JY. I
worked DL4RX easier than many stateside staitons. It was interesting to
see so many of the big contesters in the contest; I mean those you
normally hear only in the SS, WPX and other "mainstream" contests.
Perhaps the MARAC (CW) contest is becoming a "mainstream" event. If so,
then it's definitely time to add a QRP category. (John, you'll notice I
received two QRP entries this year! If we can get a few more, who
knows....)W0IZV(John) - Appreciate all the mobile stations. Picked up a
few new counties.VE2EM(Andy) - Great participation and record personal
score!NF0X(Harry) - Lost several QSO's when recorder failed. Lot of
activity on 40M. Would like to see mobiles get multipliers for counties
RUN.NS7B(Rickey) - A lot better than the SSB contest; many more stations.
Hope the sunspots are better next year; maybe work some 10 and 15
meters. Almost had bad luck: Nr. 1 log page blew out the windows
luckily highway wasn't busy and was able to pick it up!NU9M(Dick) - Next
year I'm going to get new ears, move out of Indiana, get me a super
mobile, and try again HI! Hope all the others in the contest done
better. (Some did, some didn't; but only one mobile won Indiana!
Norm)W0UBT(Bud) - While on my trip I became discouraged at the number of
contacts being made... as compared to the number of miles being driven.
I cut my trip short after putting out only a total of 22 counties. It
was almost as if I had bad breath... not possible under the
circumstances, of course. Drove a total distance of about 700 miles...
but it was fun! (Bud also had fuel and police adventures, but he's out
of room - Norm)G0CUZ(Colin) - About 30 more QSO's than last year; good
mobile activity and reasonable condx. Big thanks to all the mobiles for
the activity and "new ones". Not so easy for me using just 100W and
dipole 16' above ground level; a bit less than most other EU's chasing CH
I bet?N2CWG(Harry) - It was a fun day and got out of the house while it
was being displayed. Great contest!W3XE(Andy) - I was running around MD
and neighboring states, so I decided to submit my score. I didn't think
I had made so many contacts until I did my tape log. ...<censored> I
thought it was a good contest, and I had fun. The only rule change I can
think of which would help you and the contest is to submit your score by
email. Logs only required from certificate winners after the totals are
in.N5XG(Don) - Was lots of fun, 1,600 miles in West TX, gave last TX to
W3DKT. I wrote WN5MBX at top of each new log page; CH won't be as much
fun without my friend, Ray.K4LTA(Bill) - I don't like scoring, as working
fixed US/Canada is almost a waste of time. Suggest the following:
US/Canada - 1, DX - 2, Mobile - 3. This was my first attempt and it was
from Lake of the Ozarks, MO; 100W and low dipoles for 20M/40M.- - - - - -
