QRM: My first SO AB LP effort in this event. Missed reaching my
regional #5/national #18 HP score for '96 (as WA6KUI) by about 23%.
The difficulty of holding a run frequency adversely impacted the
results. Had a very rough start. After the first few QSOs asked
for my state I realized I had started in the wrong contest by
giving out 599 4 (CQWW)! I quickly solved this problem. My goals
(630x204=386,802) were set by using the average of three top '96
scores (N8AA, W0UO and WR3O). Most, fortunately, were exceeded.
I was going to take an hour power nap just before the event until I
realized I hadn't prepared a Band Plan! Traded the nap for a plan.
One change in preparation for this event was to elevate two radials
for my 160M Inverted L for BIG DX IMPROVEMENT. Effective S&Ping is
critical for LP success because the Mults add much value to offset
the lack of volume from effective CQing. As those who hear me know,
I am persistent when calling a new Mult. I am QRM until I make the
QSO! After several failed attempts to make a QSO with a new Mult I
will reluctantly move on and then return. In radiosport I try to
apply 'relentless pursuit, reckless abandon'. That seems to help.
Worked several new band countries for DXCC and an all time new one
(XX9TR - who I hope is/was not a pirate!). YC8TZR was loud on 40M!
Was great working Pacific, South America and Caribbean on 10M, too.
Bottomline: I had FUN! (I hope you did, too.)
